ISPO Trade Fair Relocates from Munich to Amsterdam After 50 Years

After more than half a century in Munich, the renowned ISPO sporting goods and outdoor trade fair is set to find a new home. Starting in 2026, ISPO will be hosted in Amsterdam, marking the end of an era for the Bavarian capital, according to an announcement from Messe München. The upcoming ISPO 2024 at the end of November will be the final edition in Munich.

Why the Move to Amsterdam?

Messe München, the long-time organizer and owner of ISPO, is entering a joint venture with Raccoon Media Group, a British events company known for its dynamic approach to consumer and trade exhibitions. The goal is to reinvigorate the ISPO brand and adapt it to modern market demands under Raccoon Media’s operational management.

Declining attendance and exhibitor numbers have been a growing concern. In 2018, ISPO hosted 3,307 exhibitors, but by 2024 that number had dropped to 1,937. Similarly, visitor turnout fell from 80,000 in 2019 to 55,000 in 2024, highlighting the need for change.

Shifting Industry Trends

The sports and outdoor trade fair sector has faced tough challenges in recent years. Shifts in consumer buying behavior, the rise of direct-to-consumer sales, and the evolution of retail structures have changed how brands and buyers connect.

Traditionally centered on winter sports and outdoor activities, ISPO lost major brands like Adidas, Nike, and Puma even before the pandemic. While outdoor recreation — especially hiking — saw a boost during lockdowns, recent years have brought a decline across several segments.

What’s Next for ISPO?

The move to Amsterdam reflects ISPO’s efforts to reimagine itself as a more globally focused, forward-looking event. At the request of industry stakeholders, the fair will now take place earlier in November, allowing better alignment with international product cycles — a schedule that wasn’t possible in Munich.

The relocation aims to breathe new life into the event, attract international audiences, and reaffirm ISPO’s position as a leading global platform for sports innovation, sustainability, and brand growth.
